The Six-Day War and its effects
The Six-Day War, which took place in 1967, had many causes. One of the main reasons was the political tension between Israel and its Arab neighbors. These tensions were exacerbated by territorial disputes and the conflict over access to important water resources. There was also the constant threat of terrorist attacks and mutual antagonism between Israel and the Arab states.
Yom Kippur War 1973
The Yom Kippur War began on October 6, 1973, when a coalition of Arab states, led by Egypt and Syria, launched a surprise attack on Israel. This day was a high Jewish holiday known as Yom Kippur. The Arab forces used this day to gain an advantage as many Israelis were fasting and praying.
The Second Intifada
The Second Intifada began in 2000 and was an expression of Palestinian resistance to the Israeli occupation. The reasons for the escalation were many, including the continued occupation, settlement expansion, and disappointment with the lack of a peace process. Ariel Sharon’s visit to the Temple Mount, a site of high religious significance, also fueled tensions.
Hamas - Terrorists or Freedom Fighters?
There have been several attempts at reconciliation between Hamas and the rival Fatah party, which controls the West Bank. These attempts have been aimed at forming a unity government and overcoming the division between the two areas. So far, these efforts have been largely unsuccessful, although dialogue continues.
The PLO
The Palestine Liberation Organization, or PLO, was founded in 1964. Its goal was to create a national representation for the Palestinian people and to fight for their rights and independence. The PLO demanded the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state of Palestine.
Suez Crisis
The Suez Crisis began in 1956 when Egypt, under President Gamal Abdel Nasser, took control of the Suez Canal, which had previously been operated by British and French companies. The canal was an important waterway for international trade, especially for the delivery of oil from the Middle East to Europe.
